Finder search behavior in ~/Library folder. [Screenshots included]

Hello Everyone,

I'm fairly new to Mac since 2020.

and to get familiar with macOS I used to browse and monitor my Library folder extensivly when I was on Big Sur, my use case was to try to find some application folders/files using finder and see when I delete that app, if there is any leftovers... however all data and folders was available when I search for system/invisible files.

Now, since Ventura (and latest Monterey), when I search in library, some folders/files don't appear in search, for example ~/Library/Caches

while you can find ~/Library/Audio, Accessability, Calendars , etc...

rebuilding spotlight index was no help, even doing clean install led to the same frustration...

I asked many for this specific folder, all of them having the same result (some library folders don't appear in search).

The question is:

Is there anyway to force spotlight to not exclude specific files and folders like ~/Library/Caches?

And if there is not, can we have a list of all excluded folders & files those cannot be indexed nor searched by spotlight in order to browse them manually whenever needed?

first screenshot: my library folder showing Caches (63 sub items) & Audio (3 sub items)

2nd screenshot: when I try to find "Caches" some folders named caches appear in search but non of them ~/Library/Caches

3rd screenshot: showing audio folder appears normally

A new observation might help developers fix this issue,

I ran mdls command on some folders located in /library

Seems all folders that not appear in search are missing the same metadata attributes like kMDItemKind

unlike other folders which has kMDItemKind = “Folder”

I believe this is the root cause and liked to share it with you.

Hello AlFrued,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. The best recommendations we can suggest it to attempt to narrow down your search results. This can focus the scope of your searches and the search results. For more details, click on the following link and follow the steps listed within: Narrow your search results on Mac - Apple Support

Add criteria to a search
1.) Start your search on your Mac in Spotlight or in a Finder window.
* In Spotlight: Open Spotlight , enter your search term in the search field, then click Search in Finder at the bottom of the search results.
* In a Finder window: Enter your search term in the search field, then press Return.
2.) Click the Add button  on the right side of the search window, below the search field.
3.) Click the far-left pop-up menu, then choose or add search criteria. For example, to search for only a certain type of item instead of all items, choose Kind. Or to search for any item whose name contains a particular word or phrase, choose Name. To add criteria, choose Other, then select each attribute you want to add. For example, to search copyright information, select Copyright in the list of attributes, then click OK.
A Finder window with fields to specify search criteria.

4.) Choose criteria from other pop-up menus that appear. For example, after you choose Kind, click the other pop-up menu to specify Document or Image. To add a kind, choose Other.
5.) Add or remove search criteria as needed by clicking the Add button  or the Remove button .
6.) To search using Boolean operators (OR, AND, or NOT), press and hold the Option key, then click the button  that appears. You can set criteria and specify that Any, All, or None of them must be met.

There are more additional steps listed under "Search for metadata attributes" & "Search by the type of items". If these more in-depth search options don't help you locate those specific folders that are within the Library section, we recommend that you review Apple's Unsolicited Idea Submission Policy. Specifically, the section under "Product Feedback". That way you can leave Apple feedback on things they change or improve.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Best of luck.
