MacBook Pro M1 Pro pairs with remote speaker but sound still comes from laptop

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) M1-Pro. OS 12.4

I have a late 2021 MacBook Pro M1-Pro and a JBL Micro Wireless speaker. The speaker shows it's paired with the laptop in the bluetooth menu popup - but the sound still comes from the laptop speakers. This doesn't happen with my Bose Sport Earbuds or my Beats Studio 3 headphones.

Hello laytonkm,

We see you need help with a Bluetooth speaker that doesn't seem to be playing sound from your MacBook Pro M1. We have some suggested steps to narrow down what's causing the issue or to hopefully resolve it. First, we'd suggest looking at your sound output settings when you have that speaker connected.

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Choose Sound in the left sidebar
  3. Under Output make sure the JBL Micro Wireless Speaker is selected

If that still doesn't seem to resolve the issue, next would be to test that speaker connected to another device. You mentioned that two other Bluetooth audio sources work fine on your Mac. Testing your JBL Micro Wireless speaker paired with another device will confirm if it's perhaps the speaker. Reply back with how it goes.

Take care.

Hello laytonkm,

Thanks for the update.

On the 2021 MacBook Pro, do other Bluetooth devices work as expected? If not, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support so they can look into this in more detail. You can do that here: Contact - Official Apple Support

If this only happens with the JBL Micro Wireless, you will want to reach out to JBL for help with the headphones.

Kindest regards.

Hi Soosie_J215

Thanks much for your quick response. I paired the JBL Micro Wireless to my 2021 MB Pro M1 from the Menu Bar Bluetooth control panel again, went to System Preferences/Sound and the only output device listed was "built-in" MacBook Pro Speakers.

I then tried the JBL Micro with my late 2013 MB Pro - it paired from the Menu Bar, and I tried it with at YT video - worked perfectly. When I checked the System Preferences/Sound panel I saw the JBL speaker selected there. It works fine from my iPhone SE2020 as well.

So - somehow with the M1 machine it can pair with the JBL speaker in Bluetooth without the System Sound knowing it's there at all. When I have my Beats headphones connected I do see it selected in the Sound panel info window.

BTW I'm having the snap/crackle/pop audio issue with the built-in speakers on the M1 machine as well. Don't know if that's related but the M1 device comes with a lot of problems.
