Photos blurred when viewed in Photos but become sharp in edit mode

As a Mac user for over a decade, this is a new problem. It happens on my iMac and on a brand new MacBook Air.

When viewing photos downloaded from cameras, the pictures are blurred when viewed on these devices but as soon as you enter edit mode, they instantly become sharp.

This never used to happen, has started in the last few months - and has become very irritating.

Why is this suddenly happening - and is there a remedy?

Any advice gratefully received!

G.

Thanks for the very plausible explanation, léonie. It would seem that Apple have made a conscious decision that speed and storage are more important than instant image quality in preview. If Apple think they are aiming at photographers then this is a big mistake. Most serious amateur photographers usually take a lot of shots of the same thing which they then used to be able to sort quickly in preview before choosing which shot/s to keep and to delete the rest. Now it's a more tedious task. I only hope someone from Apple reads these communities - and reverses the decision! Thanks again! G.

When you download the photos they don't yet have high resolution previews. Opening them in Edit mode is forcing Photos to render previews of the edited version. You might get the same result by rotating the phots back and forth with ⌘R and ⌥⌘R. This will be quicker, because it can be done by selecting several thumbnails at once.

It may depend on your camera models. Previously Phots has created instantly previews for all imported photos, but now Photos seems to wait until we are editing a photo and seems to be using the embedded JPEG previews created by the camera instead, until we edit a photo. That is saving time and storage, if the embedded JPEG previews are small and are needing less storage. We would not even notice it, if the embedded JPEGs were of a high quality.
