Extremely Blurry Screen M1 MacBook Pro 16

Hello! I’ve got an M1 MacBook Pro 16 from my work. I’ve been using it just fine, but recently the internal display just randomly got insanely blurry (it’s practically a black screen). I generally use my Mac with an external display connected via thunderbolt usb c, and that works fine. It’s just the internal display.

Is there any way to fix this, or is this just a screen hardware issue? I’ve attached a photo that shows what this looks like during boot, where you might usually see the apple logo and a loading bar. It’s clearly distorted and just barely recognizable. I can still control the laptop, but when I get to the login screen it’s just a big gray blob.

Yes, and if Apple refuses to provide a satisfying solution, we should consider a class action.

I just paid to fix mine with the same problem. I showed Apple this thread to point out the flaw, but they didn’t care. I paid the $900 US a carried on. Apple isn’t what it used to be. The 16 screen dies a few months after warranty. The complaint is consistent with the 16 MacBook. Apple doesn’t really care about customer service anymore….

Today I had the EXACT same thing. I was working and then my laptop went black. Tried every trick online, and when it would start up it was extremely blurry and all I would see is the blurred Apple logo.

After seeing this thread, I really hoped it wasn’t the same problem I was having.. but it was.

I got a diagnostic from Apple Genius Bar, and was told that because it was out of warranty by 2 months that I would need to pay £700+ to get it fixed.

Absolute joke, after buying a laptop that cost £1700, it shouldn’t be breaking like this after 2 years.

The Apple tech told me that it’s a hardware issue, and that other than that my machine was working completely fine.

So now I need to buy a new computer/laptop, or use an external monitor. Never buying an Apple Laptop again !

Yup, me too. Getting quoted $1000 for the repair and they still have no clue how this happened. My laptop was just in for repair 5 months ago and got the logic board replaced, that was weeks before my warranty went out, now that my warranty is completely out, of course this happens and they won’t be responsible for this. Crazy for a $3200 machine that is 1.5 years old.

This thing happened to me too, but after just 3-4 days. It does go back and forth (working sometimes, and sometimes not), and this typically shifts when ever I close the laptop and open it back up again. I did go back to the apple store to check if there were any connectivity issues, they opened the laptop twice to double-check, and everything seemed to be in order.

I wonder if the problem might have to do with the magnetic "lid angle sensor."

Got this issue this evening with my M1 MBP 16" in exactly 17 months since I've purchased it here in Ukraine.

I saw one post in this thread where the poster admits he was using it with the USB-supplied power, which is exactly my case. My Dell P2723QE provides 90W, but frankly, I doubt it has to do anything with the display issue.

I don't have any hope to resolve it via the reseller I've purchased it from, but sending email to Tim Cook's address has once magically helped in an almost identical case I had in 2014 with another MBP, early 2011's 15 inch one. Though, chances at this route are minuscule as well.

This is extremely frustrating. No accidental drops or spills. No use of third party charging cables or accessories. I’m using safari and then all of a sudden a dark and blurry screen. I hope someone can help me address this. This might be my last Apple product. I didn’t spend 2k dollars for this to happen. Best case scenario I pay a hefty fee and still have to wait weeks before I have a functioning laptop again.

Hi all, just wanted to share.

I was able to log in somehow through the very blurry screen. I then connected it to an external monitor.

After hours of playing with the “display” settings, the screen came on unbelievably.

I believe now the issue is the “pro motion” option in the display settings. Changing it to 60hrz, and set the preset to HDR seems to have done the trick. (See pic)

FYI, I did update to Sonoma and had to go through the whole thing again, and it was more of a pain the second time because for whatever reason Sonoma removed the 60hz option, and was only allowing the “Pro motion”. (Thanks again Apple!!!) Eventually it resolved itself when connecting to a different, older monitor, which made it match the main display (the Mac display) to the monitors.

its been holding now for several days, though there is a line that appears at times in the middle of the screen. That tells me there is something broken with the monitor but the OS is making it worse.

Hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem. At about 1 year and 2 months, the screen suddenly becomes dark and blurry. I can only use it with an external monitor, so the laptop becomes a desktop. A local computer shop said that it is impossible to replace the screen on this model. Apple store asked $700+ to fix it. I am very disappointed.

Same problem in 2024, unfortunate solution is to replace the screen.

My Macbook Pro 2021, M1 Max blurred out on me recently. At this point in time, the computer was 2 years old but had never been dropped once. I was just answering emails like normal and then boom, black blurry screen. There were no warning signs ahead of time, no cracks, chips or dents on my computer that would have caused it, it was just instant, unexpected and very frustrating.

For those of you with personal Macbooks that have had this happen, I'm sorry to say I unfortunately don't have a personal solution. In my case, my computer is a work computer and owned by the company I work for. My IT was able to help and they had to order in parts for an entirely new screen replacement. When I asked them what caused it, they had no idea.

This seems like a SERIOUS design flaw, as there was no reason to why my screen died on me. If I had dropped my computer right before it happened, sure that's my fault, but it was just sitting on desk behaving normally until boom, dead screen. If this has happened to you on a personal machine, I really hope your warranty covers it.
