Confusion regarding power consumption using Safari vs power consumption using Opera for certain websites

Okay, so I'm currently using a 2019 MacBook Air with MacOS Mojave as the operating system. I've always believed that Safari is the most efficient web browser for a Mac and consumes the least amount of power of all web browsers on a Mac for the same activity. However, I've noticed that for a certain video website I browse, Flosports, the power consumption of Safari is seemingly higher than that of Opera when I browse the Flosports website while in the case of browsing YouTube, the power consumption of Safari is seemingly lower than that of Opera. I'm curious to understand why each of these two web browsers seems to outdo the other for certain websites as opposed to one of them outdoing the other in the case of all websites. Could someone please explain why this is so and if there are any settings I can adjust on Opera or Safari to reduce the level of power consumption for the websites for which more power is consumed for one browser compared to the other? Thanks.

It may be the video encoding and compression is different between the sites. The browsers may be handling or processing the Javascript code differently. Plus advertisements and trackers may play a role as well. Some sites may design their website with one browser in mind and let the chips fall as they may with other browsers. How each browser is compiled and coded can make a difference as well.

Browser configuration settings and even extensions/plug-ins can make a difference.

This is nothing new and has existed since the early browsers in the 90's. You are never going to have an app that will be good for everything (or in this case every website).

Hi there, I can't exactly explain why, but I do know why on a purely programmers way, but I find Brave browser to be more efficient than any other browser. But have not measured it like you have.

Odd you might say that it benchmarks slower than the rest but in reality is the fastest for most pages, onr reason is the superfluous Adfs & Tracking it cuts out... here was after just8 months of use...

FWIW, I think this is a case of the user overthinking the situation. There are many factors that affect power consumption. Maybe the site is doing some caching, client side computations, etc. at the time you are checking the power consumption. If you are doing exactly the same thing, and your computer is doing exactly the same thing, and the server is doing exactly the same thing, and the browser being used is doing exactly the same thing, do you observe different power consumption? Also FWIW, I use FireFox and have never had power use issues.

Thanks for your response, BobTheFisherman. I sensed the difference in the levels of power consumption for these two websites in particular over the course of the last few weeks or so, i.e Safari would consume more power than Opera running Flosports while Opera would consume more power than Safari running YouTube. So I decided to experiment. I played the same YouTube video on Safari and Opera simultaneously and observed the energy impact column on Activity Monitor. I found that Safari consumed less energy than Opera. I then played the same Flosports video on Safari and Opera simultaneously and observed the energy impact column on Activity Monitor. I found that Safari consumed more energy than Opera.

So I'm curious to know why each of these two web browsers outdoes the other in terms of power consumption for certain websites as opposed to one of these web browsers outdoing the other for all websites. I'd like to generally use one web browser(the most efficient one that gives the best battery life) for all web browsing as opposed to constantly switching between them. Do you happen to have a theory on this and any suggestions on how I ought to go about picking the web browser to be used for all web browsing, BobTheFisherman?

Thanks for your response, dialabrain. If I may ask, which web browser(s) do you use and what's your battery life typically like using your web browser(s) of choice?

You're welcome. I'm probably not the best person to ask about battery life since I've never paid attention to it with any of my laptops since 2013. As far as a browser, I use Firefox as the default browser 99.9% of the time. Primarily because of a couple extensions that are available.
