Archive command not working Apple Mail in Ventura with Exchange account

Hi all,

I saw this question earlier, but still no solution:Hi all,

I use Apple Mail to access my Microsoft Exchange account. Unfortunately, I'm not able to use the Archive shortcut (control-command-A) or the general "Archive button" to archive messages because it gives the error message "could not be moved to the mailbox “(null)”

Unlike Imap accounts I can't assign in the accounts setting the "archive to archive" or "drafts to drafts" etc.. Exchange accounts don't have this option under "accounts/mailbox behaviour"

I can:

  • Transfer messages to other accounts
  • I can manually transfer messages to the Exchange Archive folder by dragging and dropping.

I've tried:

  • Rebuilding the Exchange Mailbox.

Is there any advice you might have?

Thanks

Cali

Hello Cali,

Since this is isolated to one Mac and one Exchange account, let's test in a new user account to see if this continues so that we can further narrow down the cause of this behavior. The last article we previously sent over walks you through how to do this.

Ensuring your Mac is fully updated to the latest version of macOS Ventura can also install feature improvements and bug fixes that can resolve unexpected issues like this. These steps from Update macOS on Mac show how to back up and update:

Before following these steps, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings or System Preferences.
* If you chose System Settings, click General on the left side of the window. Then click Software Update on the right.
* If you chose System Preferences, click Software Update in the window.

2. Software Update then checks for new software.
* If Software Update finds new software, click the button to install it. The button might be named Update Now, Upgrade Now, Install Now, or Restart Now, for example. You might then be asked to enter your administrator password.
* If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac.

Cheers.

Hi Cali267,

We appreciate you reaching out to us.

We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

  1. Have you had the chance to restart your Mac? Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Are you experiencing the issue on a specific mail account or on multiple mail accounts?

For accuracy, are you using the any of the steps below to archive your mails?

  • "When a Mail notification appears in the top-right corner of your screen, move the pointer over the notification, then click Archive. If Archive isn’t an option in the notification, set the “Move discarded messages” option to Archive in Viewing settings in Mail.
  • In the Mail app  on your Mac, select one or more messages, then click the Archive button  in the Mail toolbar (or use the Touch Bar). If you select an email conversation, any message in the conversation that’s in the current mailbox—for example, the Inbox—is archived; related messages that are in other mailboxes aren’t archived."

If you answer yes to all our questionst, please check if the issue persists while on safe mode.

Safe mode does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility.

Performing this step may help resolve the issue, or further isolate the issue.

Below is an article to help guide you through the process.

How to use safe mode on your Mac

To further isolate the issue, please test if the issue persists on a newly created user account.

  1. "On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Users & Groups  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
  2. Click the Add Account button below the list of users on the right (you may be asked to enter your password.)
  3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
  4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  6. Click Create User."

Hi kamote0628

thanks for your help, to answer your questions:

1) Have you had the chance to restart your Mac? Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

➞ yes

2) Are you experiencing the issue on a specific mail account or on multiple mail accounts?

➞ I have two different exchange accounts in my Apple mail. The problem only persists in one of the accounts.

In regard to when the "archive" error comes up:

Clicking the “Archive button” in the mail toolbar: ➞ doesn’t work

Clicking and on Incoming notification in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting archive: ➞ doesn’t work

Right-click on the message and select archive: ➞ doesn’t work

Right-click the message and “move to” specific exchange archive: ➞ does work!

Moving the message by hand into a specific exchange archive: ➞ does work!

Move the message in any other folder: ➞ does work

(Btw, moving messages into the Exchange Junk, Drafts or rubbish folder also works, only the archive one does not)

Additional observations:

- Apart from iCloud and Gmail accounts, I also have two different exchange accounts in my Apple mail. The problem only persists in one of the accounts.

- On other Ventura machines the issue does not exist.

Maybe this helps to identify the problem

Thanks!

Cali
