Why need iTunes Store in concept?

Hi there!

Iam just want to clarify for myself. What is iTunes Store about and what it's purpose for?

I used it only once for ringtone buying, and then uninstalled it from my iphone.

As i can see - apps is in appstore, for music here is apple music, also with movies and shows, separate or as apple one.

So is here some reason for it and why it's exist on iphone?

p.s. it's not an a troll attempt honestly, iam just trying to understand. i'm not familiar with apple ecosystem to much.

iPhone XR, iOS 16

Purchasing albums and purchasing tracks means you’re somewhat less prone to losing access to your preferred music, where a music rental service (such as Apple Music) can and sometimes does change what is on offer and that for various reasons. Major artists and labels probably won’t shift in availability. Smaller labels and lesser-known artists can sometimes become unavailable.

You might also prefer a particular version of an album or track, and sometimes an artist or label will remove that version and will replace it with a newer or different or remastered version. If you don’t mind that change happening, a rental service can meet your needs. If you do, you might want to purchase and archive your preferred copies.

Music purchased from Apple typically also has no DRM, which means you are not restricted to playback with devices compatible with Apple Music; you can transfer and play back your purchases on most audio devices.

The Apple Music subscription is a rental, and not a purchase.

Stored offline or not, the music rented from and downloaded from Apple Music subscription will be inaccessible, if (when) the Apple Music subscription expires.

This due to the use of time-limited DRM; of encryption.

Apple makes this all somewhat more confusing with their re-use of terminology, too.

Apple uses “Apple Music” as the name of the app—the Apple Music app which can play music ripped from your CDs (and a Mac with a SuperDrive or other optical drive can rip from those CDs), can play music purchased from the iTunes Store and from elsewhere, and can play music rented from Apple.

Apple also uses “Apple Music” as the name of the Apple music rental and streaming service Apple Music the subscription.

And for extra added confusion if you’re using Mac, the iTunes Store is available inside the Apple Music app on macOS.

But again, Apple Music the subscription is a rental, and not a purchase. Stop renting, and the music (and the iCloud hosting of your own music that is part of that service) all disappears.

The Apple Music app is limited on iPhone and iPad.

Particularly around ripping and importing, among other limits. (macOS and Windows can rip and can import just fine.)

Though not as limited as iPod was, it’s less than fully capable for entirely standalone and self-contained operations.

Apple intends to have your music library stored elsewhere; either hosted in iCloud (via the iTunes Match sync service or the Apple Music subscription service and its included sync service), or on a Mac or Windows system.

This all as differentiated from subscriptions / rentals, and purchases / rips.

Thanks! But as i can see i can use as downloaded for offline my library and listen offline. Is downloaded disappear if apple music subscription will not be renewed? ( i just bot tried yet).

But i have had understood mainly.

Iam old fart and mostly all the way sitted into android phones (and still has few) and in pc world, also not any kind audiophile, i mean i love music, very love, but really don't care and no demand lossless and that all new fancy features like spatial things or atmos or whatever.

I used usual just dump few tons of GB in simple .mp3 to microsd card, put it to phone and use system or any pref player.

But when i pick iphone i decide just not to jerking with something and just buy apple music subscription (nice it in my region i have luck to find all my loved bands and singers), also with iphone i have very straight policy for use the most native apps and services as i can for security purposes.

for other i have diff androids, also some with root, so everything.

But iam new with apple things and have some missing understandings.

Also i have taking one more phone special iphone for its secure and closed all the ways and totally that's no any complaint also as i mentioned iam special preferred using as much native as possible, but just some things not obvious clear, like that with iTunes.

Thanks for explaining!

Thank you.

Yes iam agree about confusing, but as i have realized it's narrow concept of "just work" as whole Apple way.

for example i can tap any media file in Photos, Files, and whatever i find it and it starts playing (but somehow it's absolutely noticeable that media playback started from Files has different (not significantly) interface and features that compared to one when starting from Photos.

But here is no way (or i have not found?) to enter directly in system media player and then open files or whatever from it, or make an playlist or playlist folders..
