Up grading memory on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Mid 2015)

as standard it has 8gb installed on 2 port of 4 gb, compared to buying a newer i mac i m trying to speed it up bu upgrading the memory to 4 x 8gb so 32 which i believe is the max. my question is, do i need to do anything thing special prior to removing the old memory cards to installing the new cards

iMac 27″, macOS 11.7

Other than turning your iMac off and unplugging it there's nothing special you need to do. You should know installing more RAM won't necessarily make it any faster. It will allow you to run more apps at once or more memory intensive apps.

that's what i was thinking, the opening of apps allow me to go make a cuppa at the moment, with all these upgrades to apps, slowly the file become bigger. the only advantage i have is the 27 inch is upgradeable to 32gb, so a lot cheaper option than being a new 24inch mac, although i appreciate the new m1 probably makes a difference, £114 is better than £1500 plus at the moment.
