How to retrieve old photos on my new MacBook Air?

I have photos from my macbook air 2012 stored on an external hard drive but my new macbook air 2020 is unable to open them. What do I need to do to retrieve my old photos?

A bit more information is needed. Assuming you are using the Photos program, your computer may not know where to find the photos on the external drive. Photos are normally contained in the Pictures folder of your user directory in a package (a special folder) called Photos Library. It has the same icon as the Photos app. Open your external drive and find the Photos Library and double click on it. That should open the Photos app and load your photos.
