Why are my photos not stored on my MacBook after transfer?

I recently added photos from my old Mac to my new one by transferring to external hard drive and then importing to new. However my MacBook only shows 1GB when it should be like 300GB. Are they just linked from my external hard drive? How can I ensure they are saved on the new computer and not just linked from external drives? Thank you!!

Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library.

If you're running a referenced library the external drive must be connected to your MacBook whenever you open the library because that's where the original files will be.

If you want to move the referenced files into the library as a "managed" library select the Photos in your library that are referenced and use the File ➙ Consolidate menu option to copy the photos from the hard drive into the library.
