iMessage Notifications on MacBook not directing to correct conversation in the iMessage App

I use iMessages on a MacBook Pro using MacOS 13.2.1 (22D68). I used to be able to click on a notification I'd receive on my laptop and it would take me to the Messages app and open the conversation of the person I just received the text message from. Now every time I click on a Message notification on my MacBook, it always takes me to whatever conversation I viewed last in the app and not the person that just sent me the text message. I've sent texts to the wrong person because I forget that when I click on a notification that it doesn't take me to the correct conversation and I type away and hit send later realizing I sent it to the wrong person. I have to manually select the correct conversation or it's going to the wrong person (unless they just happen to be the last conversation I viewed).

I've checked notification settings and the settings within the Messages app and I can find no setting that might have gotten changed on my laptop. My iPhone Messages app works correctly when clicking on a notification. Can someone help me please?
