Syncing or backing up my iphone, causing duplicate songs and playlists to be created.

Every time I sync or backup music from my iphone, duplicate songs and playlists are being created. I have spent hours manually removing the duplicates, changing settings, and deleting and re-installing itunes only to have everything come right back when my phone backs up each night.

Understood KTB0117,

Do you use both Apple Music as well as manually sync with your computer? The reason being is that this is essentially syncing in two places, which can duplicate what's being seen. Information on confirming the settings on both computer and iPhone can be found here: Use Sync Library to access your music library across your devices - Apple Support

Cheers!

Hi there KTB0117,

To confirm, you are seeing the duplicate songs and playlists in iTunes and not on your iPhone, correct? We want to make sure we fully understand what you are encountering.

We understand that you have tried deleting and installing iTunes again. You'll want to ensure that the iTunes on your computer is fully up-to-date, as that can sometimes resolve unexpected issues. If needed, the steps below show how to possibly check for that:

"Check for iTunes updates from the iTunes Download page

If you install iTunes from the iTunes Download page, you can manually check for updates to iTunes, or set iTunes to check for new versions automatically every week.

In the iTunes app  on your PC, do one of the following:

  • Manually check for new versions of iTunes: Choose Help > Check for Updates.
  • Have iTunes automatically check for new versions every week: Choose Edit > Preferences, click Advanced, then make sure the “Check for new software updates automatically” is selected.

When automatic updating is turned on, iTunes checks for new updates weekly. It checks only after you have quit and restarted iTunes at least once during a seven-day period."

Those steps are from this article: Update iTunes on PC - Apple Support Let us know if that helps or if you've already tried that step.

Take care!

Hey there KTB0117,

We'd like to confirm more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some other possible causes:

  1. When did this first start to occur on both your Windows PC and within your iPhone?
  2. You mentioned recently updating iTunes, but have you already checked for any Windows updates on your PC?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Has a restart been tried of your Windows PC? What about your iPhone? Just in case, here's the link with the steps for your iPhone: Restart your iPhone
  4. If you have a compatible iPhone model, the latest version is iOS 16.3.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.

Cheers!

Hi Claire,

I am seeing duplicates on both my phone and iTunes. I downloaded the latest version from the iTunes download page when I removed and reinstalled the program.

I will go through my playlists on iTunes and delete the duplicates. Then re-sync. That seems to help until my phone backs up each night. Then I am back to double, sometimes triple playlists in my iPhone and iTunes and duplicate songs back onto my phones music app. I have turned off the save a copy setting to see if that would help as well.
