Why does iCloud create a subfolder inside my Documents folder when it starts to sync?

I have turned the option for iCloud to sync my desktop and document folder to iCloud. However in doing so I noticed that ICloud has created a subfolder in my documents folder on my laptop, as well as a desktop subfolder. How can I eliminate these subfolders and use just the regular documents and desktop? Thank you!
