Is my MacBook rooted?

Hello, I downloaded an app on my MacBook Air 2020 (running on the latest MacOS) and when I opened it, a message (within the app) popped up saying that the app cannot work on ROOTED devices. Consequently, my question is: how do I check whether my MacBook has been rooted? I bought is as new from an authorised Apple reseller in my country a week ago. I am worried about the security of my device.

The app in question was MELINK, on my iPhone it works just fine and such a message never popped up.

Thank you in advance.

Hello darkknight8,

You are right to be concerned if your MacBook is "rooted" or has the root user enabled, as this would provide access to areas of the system that are normally protected from access. This article will provided info on how to enable and disable root user access: How to enable the root user or change the root password on Mac - Apple Support

Best regards.

Hi darkknight8,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you were unable to install an app because the app said your device is ROOTED. You may need to ask the app developer since the message occurred within their app. Here's how to contact them if needed: How to contact an app developer.

  1. "Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Click the sign-in button  or your photo.
  3. A list of apps appears. Click the app that you want. If you can't find the app, use the search bar.
  4. The app's product page appears. Click Support or App Support. If you don't see Support or App Support, make sure that you're signed in with the correct Apple ID."

This article does provide some information about enabling or disabling a root user, but they may not be referring to the same thing: How to enable the root user or change the root password on Mac.

Take care.
