So I have the Mac display on my Roku TV but it only shows the system preferences>displays tab on the screen. Not very useful! What am I doing wrong?

Hello AlliFyfe,

Let's use the steps below to see if that behavior persists while the mirror option is set:

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Displays  in the sidebar.
2. Click the name of your display on the right, click the “Use as” pop-up menu, then choose Mirror for Display.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Use one or more external displays with your Mac - Apple Support

Should that still persist, are you experiencing the same behavior with other external displays?
