Forcing external display as main on MacBook Pro with broken screen

The screen on my Mac book pro is broken. How do I force the system to make external display the main display?

Use Command-F1, that toggles between extended and mirroring for the external display. Alternatively, connect an external keyboard, mouse/trackpad and AC power and close the lid.

Thank you, command+F1 did not work for me. I did however stumble upon the close the lid trick and was able to navigate with a wireless mouse.
