editing background music for a video on iMovie for mac

I have a video clip. Added a music song as background but I want to cut off the first 20s off the audio. And. It. Just. Won't. Let. Me. iMovie is driving me crazy. I've done it before, today even. but now it just will not let me cut off the first part of the song, or rather it will let me cut it off but then I am unable to match the new beginning of the audio to the beginning of the video which is in the original length. HELP. I have browsed the internet and now tried for hours. literally.

So in the timeline I have the video and then 20s later the audio starts. But. It. Won't. Let. Me. Move. The. Fracking. Audio. Forward.

It might be that an iMovie preference has gone awry. Try deleting/resetting preferences. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Then try editing. Possibly you may need to reboot to set the changes.  Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.

If still no luck, create a new project and move your media to it. Then see if you can edit the background music.
