Music ignores Optimise Storage setting and uses all available storage

I have an iPhone 12 running current iOS (16.3.1). Company phone, so only 64GB. I have a large photo library and moderate Music library.

I thought that Photos was meant to manage its storage - but have had to remove the link to iCloud Photo Library is this always resulted in my phone being full.

I deleted almost all music in my Apple Music library, leaving only 2GB. My Optimise Storage is turned on & Minimum Size set to 4GB. 2 weeks later, my phone is out of space again, Apple Music has taken 12.5 GB, and doesn't delete anything. Even going into Manage Storage >. Apple Music >> and trying to delete tracks / albums, the UI locks up and doesn't delete anything.

Why can't Photos and Music manage space within a pre-defined quota, or manage space so that there is always some free space left?

Any helpful suggestions on how to keep constrain Music?

Hello Richardsingapore,

This page can help out with providing info on how Optimize Storage will work for iCloud Photos: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

If you need to save space on your device
iCloud Photos keeps all your photos and videos in their original, high-resolution version. To save storage space on your device, you can turn on Optimize Storage.

If you turn on Optimize Storage, iCloud Photos automatically manages the size of your library on your device. Your original photos and videos are stored in iCloud and space-saving versions are kept on your device. Your library is optimized only when you need space, starting with the photos and videos you access least. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.

If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photos keeps your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device.

With regards to the Music app's Optimize Storage option, this will be for the amount of storage you'd like to keep for songs on the device. For example, if you set it to 16GB, it will only start deleting songs if they haven't been played in a while and the amount of music storage is over that 16GB amount.

You may try setting it to 'None' if you'd like.

Cheers.
