can't get to gmail using the apple "mail" icon

I have a new MacBookAir updated to a Ventura 13.2.1. I gave a gmail account and "----@gmail.com" address. I have added this account and its password to the Apple Mail Settings. I have Safari set as the default browser. When I click on the Mail icon I see the following, There are no emails. Any suggestions?

yes you contact gmail and look at their help site. You'll need 2 factor authentication or app specific password to use their account with Apple mail.
