Hi. I restarted my iPhone 12 when the face recognition stopped working Monday morning.
after the restart the screen has been black yet the phone is on, and rings. I have forced shutdown etc, wiped the phone and tried to restore yet the screen still black? Any ideas please? I have booked an appointment with Apple at the wknd. Thanks.

Reading the troubleshooting steps you already tried (to no avail), it could be a hardware (battery? screen? other internal component?) failure but we, just users like you, cannot diagnose that issue remotely, sorry.
In this situation, I believe you have made the best choice by making an appointment at an Apple Store or AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) to have your iPhone inspected. After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.
