Monterrey Time Machine Backup Fails on Photos File

Hi, I have repeated problems with Time machine failing. There is plenty of disk space. The error I get is:

“/Users/me/Pictures/Photos Library.photoslibrary/originals/E/ED607E79-B27F-4FEF-A17B-CF8C21499B02.psd” could not be backed up.

How can I clear this file error or allow time machine to skip this file and complete?

Hi RobViet,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're unable to complete your Time Machine backup due to an error.

You may consider running First Aid on your backup disk. If you need help to run First Aid, you can follow the steps outlined in this article to help you to repair the disk: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

You can also update the firmware for your backup disk and ensure that the drive is connected directly to your Mac. This resource covers these troubleshooting steps along with other suggestions: If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine - Apple Support

"If Time Machine says that it can't use your backup disk to back up or restore your files, try these solutions.

  • Make sure that you're using a backup disk supported by Time Machine.
  • Unless you're using a network backup disk, make sure that your backup disk is connected directly to your Mac, not through a USB hub or other device.
  • If your backup disk is connected directly to your Mac, use Disk Utility to repair the disk.
  • If you're using a network backup disk, make sure that the network connection is good and your Mac is connected to the same network as the backup disk. If you completed a previous backup successfully, verify that backup: Press and hold the Option key while choosing Verify Backups from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar.
  • Make sure that the firmware of your backup disk is up to date. Check with the manufacturer of the backup disk for details.
  • If no other solutions work, start over: Erase your backup disk, then use Time Machine to select it as your backup disk again. "

We hope this helps you.

Take care!

Greetings RobViet,

Since the error only occurs during a backup, that may indicate that the issue is related to Time Machine or a file there. However, you can follow the same steps as instructed above to run Disk Utility on your Mac to see if this helps to correct the issue. Here are those steps just in case you need them again: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility - Apple Support.

Also, look over the information on this page to learn how to exclude items or certain files if this issue continues after running Disk Utility on the Mac HD: If Time Machine on your Mac doesn’t back up certain files - Apple Support.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings > General, click Time Machine , then click Options.
2. If a file you want to back up is in the list of excluded items, select it, then click the Remove button .

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!

The error message implied to me the error was with the source file. The file path seems to imply it is on my PC hard drive, not on the disk I am writing to. (That path does not exist on the backup disk, I don't believe.) Do I read this correctly that you believe it may be an error on the external backup disk with a file it is trying to overwrite?
