Apple ID problems - 2 Apple IDs

I have a very old Apple ID from when I first got an iPhone, and a more recent Apple ID which is in the newer email format. This is the ID I want to use for everything. Setting up a new iPhone, the system has defaulted to using the old ID again for some purchases and subscriptions, and the phone uses the two IDs for different functions. I thought I had managed to combine the two IDs under my newer ID (at least I had done on the phone I am replacing), but this seems to have been unsuccessful with the new phone, as both IDs are present again, and I can't seem to change it. When I try to edit the old ID, it won't let me use the new ID/email. All very frustrating. Can anyone advise how to consolidate everything under my newer ID?

Merging Apple accounts (IDs) or transferring data is not officially supported. Read the links below for things you may need to do to transfer as much as is possible and to share some others.

Apps and media bought with one ID are permanently associated with that ID. Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs, and for some data sharing features.

If you have signed into the first ID on a device then fortunately when you sign out of that ID, do not erase the device, then sign in with a different ID, it asks you in most cases if you wish to merge the data from the two IDs on your device. Although this next section discusses email address re-use in the context of deleting an account, it supports observations frequently posted on this forum about not being able to re-use an email address as an Apple ID once used previously as an Apple ID:

"Can I use the primary email address for my deleted Apple ID account to create a new Apple ID or with another existing Apple ID account?

No, once your Apple ID is deleted, you can't use the email address that you used with it to create a new Apple ID. In addition, you can't use that email address with another existing Apple ID except as a rescue [notification] email. Also, if your primary Apple ID email address is with a Custom Email Domain, it can never be reused to create an Apple ID after your Apple ID is deleted, even if the domain ownership changes."
