It seems that recent updates to Big Sur have removed the easy to use feature to add a new contact to an existing Group (aka List). I sense that there are many users who would welcome a work-around to improve list management. Currently running Version 13.0 (2452.7.1) on Big Sur 11.7.4.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You should be able to drag and drop the contacts to your group. Here's more details, just in case: Create and change groups in Contacts on Mac - Apple Support
Add contacts to a group
1. In the Contacts appon your Mac, select one or more contacts listed in the sidebar.
2. There’s no limit to the number of contacts you can add to a group. If you use more than one account in Contacts, make sure the contacts you select are in the same account.
3. Drag the selected contacts to a group in the sidebar.
4. If the contacts aren’t added to the group, check if it’s a Smart Group—you can’t add contacts to a Smart Group.
If you use an Exchange account in Contacts, those contacts can belong to only one folder at a time. Any contacts that aren’t in a folder you create are in the default Exchange Contacts folder.

You have identified a process that I have used for decades. My frustration is that this process seems to work in a different way, if at all. I first noticed this when I got a new MBA with Ventura 13.2.1. Then I went back to older machines (running Big Sur) and found that, before the recent BS update, my historic approach was working, and after the update, it did not; that is, a similar result to that with the new Ventura.
That's what's puzzling.
