iPad can't connect to iPhone personal hotspot suddenly

I use my personal hotspot with my wifi only 9th generation ipad regularly when traveling. I used it extensively just this weekend - no problems.

On Monday, I started getting an error about incorrect password for iphone hotspot. I double checked - I was using the correct password. I tried re-entering several times, rebooted, tried again several times always the same error. I tried resetting network settings - still same problem. I changed my hotspot password - same error. I have tried many times.

Called Apple support - suggested updating iphone to 16.3.1. iPad already updated. Asked me to remove my VPN. All done. Still same problem.

I need this feature at least a couple times a month. I didn't do anything with the iPad between it work well to not being able to connect at all.

First level support had no insights or suggestions. Is it worth trying to get this escalated? I've tried everything other than a factory reset on my iPad. I'll consider doing that when I have another few hours to waste my time on trouble-shooting something that Apple support should have the tools and knowledge to assist with.

I'm open to suggestions.

Hotspot is carrier specific feature --> Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider) The agency who issued the SIM to you

Click --> If Personal Hotspot is not working on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi

Check the following

  1. Network coverage and stability
  2. Data Balance
  3. On you windows (See if WiFi Auto Joins is enabled)
  4. Also check if you have any stronger WiFi signal around your computer.

Thanks for the suggestion but this is a problem with my iPad not my personal hotspot. To be clear, I have searched the Apple knowledge base extensively and there is absolutely nothing to help. The article you linked to doesn't refer to the issue I'm having at all. I have also searched Apple Community as well as any site I can find that may have useful information.

My personal hotspot works fine with my Macbook Pro. It's my iPad that simply stopped connecting for no apparent reason, reporting that the correct password is incorrect. I am logged into my iPhone and iPad and Macbook Pro with the same Apple ID. My Macbook Pro connects immediately, with no password. My iPad complains about the correct password being incorrect.

I have used this iPad with this personal hotspot extensively for the past 4 months without a single glitch. Same carrier, same devices.

If you have any insights as to why my iPad has stopped performing correctly, please let me know.
