Compatible CD/DVD read/write drive for 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro chip

Hi. Looking for a compatible CD/DVD read/write drive for my dad’s 2021 14 inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip. Unfortunately, apple’s SuperDrive is not compatible. Thanks for your help.

whoever told you that the superdrive is not compatible with apple silicon Macs was mistaken. but it needs to be connected directly to the Mac. it will not function if connected through a dock or hub. and for Macs that only have TB3 / USB-C ports, you would need to use an adapter such as the one linked to by bumbleben0.

but if you want to go third party, you can look at OWC DVD / CD / Blu-ray drives for aftermarket solutions.

Pioneer makes some very nice CD/DVD/BD drives that are compatible. I have an older model BDR-XD07S that works perfectly fine; the current version is the BDR-XD08S. Like other external CD/DVD/BD drives it should only be connected directly to your Mac (not via a USB hub). And while it is bus powered, I do recommend that you get the companion DCA-003 power adapter especially if you have other USB devices connected at the same time.

CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Burner:

What I Use: Verbatim External USB 3.2 All-in-One Optical Writer (71094). Works like a charm on my M1 Macs and Intel Macs. The software is quick and easy to use.
