MagSafe 2 Power Adapter gets hot

I am on my second power adapter. Each one has developed a split in the plastic coating near the magnetic end. I suspect it the result of heat over several months. It still charges. I want to replace the adapter, but I want to find out what's causing this.

It's difficult to diagnose properly over the internet but its quite possible several strands have broke at the strain relief causing increased resistance which in turn could cause heat. As it has happened more than once I would suggest to have both the cord/power supply and your mac examined together by a qualified technician to find the cause. If needed use the link provided to get started.

Thank you all for the replies. I think the root cause is likely too much bend at the computer end of the cord, and then broken strands, resistance, and heat.

The connection is on the left side of the MacBook and, given where I usually sit, the cord comes from the right side, causing a bend. I'll have to change this. I can also unplug while using the computer.

It might be getting hot because it is not the original one and is undersized for that computer so working too hard. If you get a new one don't skimp on a smaller wattage for a couple of bucks. A larger wattage is not an issue - the computer will only draw what it needs.

I often repair and provide support for the cable on ones that are getting weak at that point with Sugru, a moldable glue/flexible plastic.

That said - Nothing beats treating a cable, any cable, well. Taking a few seconds to take care of it every time you use it brings rewards like my having some over 15 years old that show little wear. - Be careful to wrap it neatly with no sharp bends, don't use those tabs on the charger to wrap it because they cause sharp bends, don't let it get twisted and untrist it when it does, when wrapplig it make sure to let it coil as its natural lay desires and don't force it, plug it in, and unplug it carefully.
