All of the sudden my iPhone has decided to start censoring certain words in incoming texts and emails with asterisks

I recently began noticing that my iPhone is automatically censoring certain words by leaving the first letter visible, but replacing the rest of the letters in the word with asterisks. Example: f******. It does this on incoming text messages and incoming emails that I view with the iOS integrated email app. I think I started noticing after installing 16.3.1 update, but possibly before. Anyone else seeing this?

Hello Blueibear,

Is this happening with emails and texts from multiple contacts or just a particular one? If it seems to be specific to one contact you may wish to see if they're manually performing the partial censoring of the word(s).

You may try seeing if there are restrictions, profiles or Mobile Device Management installed, as these may affect some functionality. These can be located within Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. You can learn more about this here: Get started with a supervised iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

You may also try testing things by texting/emailing yourself to see if it still occurs there.
