Connecting Mac to Mac for screen monitor

I have a Mac book Pro and a 2017 iMac desktop. I have them connected with thunderbolt. I cannot get them to recognize each other. Trying to use the laptop as a monitor. HELP???

Both Mac's must meet the requirements for Target Display Mode.

Not sure what year model your MacBook Pro is or what macOS version it is on?

But for sure the 2017 iMac can not be used as a display or use another Mac if it is run anything later than Catalina.
