Appel menu > System Settings > Lock Screen > Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off > Never
That locked the screen. Instead I tried System Preferences/Security and Privacy and then chose General/Require password after XX hours. Never was not a choice so I went for 8 hours. FWIW, disabling "Require password…" is the equivalent of "Never".
