Why doesn't Photos on my Macbook Pro have the same number of photos as in iCloud and my iMac?

It seems as though my MacBook Pro has stopped syncing with iCloud because it's showing some 6.000 less photos. The iMac, iPhone and iPad are all OK. What can I do to correct that?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

"iCloud photos 131,054 videos 3024 other items 70 "

The problem might be caused by the "Other items 70". Try to identify the items that are neither photos nor videos, as they are probably causing the iCloud upload to hang. It could be anything, that has been imported, when Photos (or Aperture, or iPhoto) allowed us to import items in a format, that is no longer supported on Catalina or later. Check with a smart album for files with file nam e extensions that are not a supported video or image format.

For example, I had to remove all audio files (imported with Aperture) and all PDF files (imported with Photos 2) to get Photos to sync again with iCloud. An example, on how to use smart albums to find problematic items: How to Weed out Legacy Media in Photos for Mac - Apple Community

Let's gather some more information.

What counts of photos and videos show on each device at the bottom of the All Photos view? What status shows on the line below that on each device?

What counts show on iCloud.com?

When did you first notice that the counts did not match?

What version of macOS do you run on your MacBook Pro? What specific model is it?

What versions of iOS/iPadOS do you run on your iPhone and iPad? What models are they?

Hi markwmsn - here's all the info you've asked for:

iCloud photos 131,054 videos 3024 other items 70 - updated at 8.44

iPad Air 5th gen. photos 131,129 videos 3024 other items 1 Synced with iCloud just now iOS 16.2

iPhone 12 Pro photos 131,130 videos 3024 other items 1 syncing 1 item with iCloud (it always says that now) iOS 16.3.1

MBP 13 inch mid 2012 photos124,477 videos 2737 other items 1 uploading 116,247 items (it seems to have been doing this for ages) other items 1 10.15.7 Catalina

iMac 27 inch late 2009 photos 131,134 videos 3024 other items 1 10.13.6 High Sierra

The latest photo on the MBP was taken on 5th March 2023 and since then I've added 217 photos, according to the iMac. I was in New Zealand from 6/12/22 to 10/2/23 and that seems to be where the bulk of the difference lies.

I don't know why the MBP seems to be uploading everything and at the speed it's doing it it's going to take months to complete the upload, despite the fast fibre broadband I now have. Maybe once it's done that it will start downloading.

I hope this info might be useful. Might it be possible to start a new Library on the MBP - if so would I have to delete the existing one and how would I connect the new one to iCloud?

Thank you léonie. I've always had a single item which I was told a long time ago was a pdf file. I had not previously been concerned about the difference of 70 because the totals were still pretty accurate as far as everything other than the MBP are concerned. I've just identified that there are 68 pdf items on the MBP via a smart album just looking for pdf items. I created a smart album "Photos of a certain format" as you suggest and it includes pdf and also "unable to upload to iCloud Photos" and it hasn't come up with anything, despite the fact that the MBP itself has created an unable to upload library which contains 8 photos all taken on 26 December 2019 in the same place 3 of which are png files and 5 of them are MP4 files.

I really don't know what to do though I suppose I could try to convert the pdf files - but how do I convert them and to what ?JPEG?

A further bit of info! Today when I opened the MBP, Photos said it couldn't go any further because there wasn't enough room on the external hard drive which is a 2TB drive. But the size of the Photos Library on the MBP is 1.22 TB and that was what the drive contained, though the disk info said it was full. The size of the Library on the iMac is 1.47TB so I'm assuming that the difference is probably the 6,000 odd photos plus 300 odd videos which don't seem to be getting through to the MBP. So now I'm trying to copy the iMac Library onto a 4TB external hard drive to see if I can substitute that for the MBP 2TB external drive. I'm keeping my fingers crossed because I tried that once before and it took ages to progress (unsurprisingly because it's so big) and as it neared the end it said it couldn't go any further because of an error - can't remember the full number but it ended with 60 - it's a new hard drive so would that indicate a fault on the hard drive?

Why doesn't Photos on my Macbook Pro have the same number of photos as in iCloud and my iMac?
