My home network went down and I had to reset my Airport Extreme base station. I was using another Airport Extreme to extend. I have not been able to get it to set up to extend base station except with an ethernet cable. I've tried over and over and get error on updating.
I was trying to set up with newer iMac. After getting Apple help on phone, I was told to try setting up with iPhone or iPad. Set up with iPhone without a problem. Apparently, the new computer on Ventura no longer works well with the Airport utility. I didn’t think to try a different device. I know now. Wasted the entire morning trying to figure why it no longer would work.

Are you trying to use a Mac or an iPhone / iPad to set up the second AirPort Extreme to wirelessly extend the network?
If you have been using a Mac, do you have an iPhone or iPad handy to try the setup that way?
Wireless extender couldn’t be set up with iMac. Re-set up using iPhone. Apparently, newest iMacs don’t work well with Airport utility. Don’t really want to make changes now that all working and reconnecting with all devices.
Try and use one system to setup and config all Airport devices.
On a iMac its easy to save config to a folder or usb flash drive. This way you have Airport config to reload/restore “known good older configs” if and when needed.
Also recommend to allow configs of airport devices thru Ethernet port ONLY, don’t allow remote configs from Internet.
Now change base station of Airport device default passwd to an alphanumeric with at least eight-twelve digits in length.
Have a different passwd for the wireless AP;access points SSID/name
