A paper clip would be a bad idea as it could damage the connectors inside that port. Of course, I'm assuming you used a metal paper clip for this purpose. Instead you should use either a wood or plastic toothpick to prevent such potential damage.
Regardless, if you are still unable to charge your phone, there are a number of possibilities that may be the cause:
- The port is damaged.
- The charging cable is damaged.
- The power adapter you are using is faulty.
- The phone's battery is faulty.
- The phone's logic board is faulty.
At this point, the best option would be to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them take a look and provide you with your options.
