Pages -- separate open windows become tabs when opening a new file

I like to keep multiple open windows with different documents in Pages. I don't like tabs.

For a long time it had seemed like sometimes open docs just disappeared when I navigated away from pages, and this always confused me. I just realized what might have been happening when opening a new document while having two documents already open in separate windows. The separate windows collapsed into one window with two tabs. Is there a way to disable this feature? And to have documents default to opening in windows, not tabs? It is not great visually or functionally. Thanks.

I think I figured it out! Under General, there is an option that asks 'prefer tabs'--mine was set to Always. I set to Never and now it's opening windows not tabs. Thanks!

Yes, you found it. System Preferences > General > Prefer Tabs. Sometimes this gets set to "always" for some reason and can affect various apps and can mystify the user, since there's no way inside the app to fix it.

PS: Discovered this (archived) Apple Support article about Tabs:

says about "dragging" tabs to rearrange them ... maybe that's a clue:

Use tabs with apps on your Mac - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"Move tabs or switch between them

Move a tab to a new window:

✽. Drag the tab out of the tab bar.

✽. Or select the tab, then choose Window > Move Tab to New Window.

✽ Or Control-click the tab to open a shortcut menu,

then choose Move Tab to New Window.

Move a tab from one window to another: Drag the tab to the tab bar of the other window.

Change the order of tabs: Drag the tab before or after another tab.

Switch to another tab: Either click the tab you want to view, or choose Show Previous Tab or Show Next Tab from the View menu".

Hi merryheart777,

Re: "Pages -- separate open windows become tabs when opening a new file"

Seems the + sign icons in Pages can be confusing.

ie the + at the top far right opens a new tab in the current document (not a new window, or page, as one might expect.)

while the + for add page on the left just adds new pages to the current document

Re: "The separate windows collapsed into one window with two tabs. Is there a way to disable this feature? "

For Mac OS 12.6 (if you have upgraded to Ventura, things may be different!)

Seems that may have been accidentally triggered somehow. (Maybe by swiping ?) I could be wrong. (There is a menu command for "move tab to new window")

As far as I can tell there are no settings for either opening in new Windows or in Tabs,

as the tabs are only added with the + on the top right.

Was unable to replicate what you experienced when I tried opening page after page on my Mac. (both with, and without, using the chooser for new pages)

Am often working constantly with three or more open docs, each in its own window, leaving and returning. The only way tabs appear is when I click the + icon.

From "Windows" in the menu bar, using the drop-down menu, tabs can be moved to a new window however:

Re: And to have documents default to opening in windows, not tabs?

Seems that is already the default. (Works as such on my MacBook Pro 15")

(Am assuming however, that you are still using Monterey MacOS 12.6 like me)

So I guess I'm not much help to you here:

If you are having multiple appearances of tabs and windows "misbehaving".

You might want to send feedback to Apple about Pages behaviour.

They will likely not reply, yet if others are also experiencing similar occurrences,

(eg: maybe on certain Mac models) there may be changes in a future update.

All the best :-)

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. I am using Monterey 12.6 on MacBook Pro. I'm interested to hear that new Pages documents are opening as windows for you, not tabs. I do not use the Plus icon to add new documents, I add from the File dropdown menu by selecting New. I do do what you describe aboce and drag the tabs out to become windows. I think there must be something in my settings that is defaulting to opening as tabs. I will contact apple support.

Best!
