No sound on MacBook Air

I cannot see 'output speakers' when I click on 'Sound' 'Output' for MacBook air 2011 - when I hit the 'increase volume' key I see a 'speaker icon' and underneath is a circle with a line through it.

internal speakers suddenly i can't hear any sound from my internal speakers in my macbook air. I can't find internal speakers in my audio settings when i go to system preference. there is an audio sign with a slant stroke \ across it at the menu bar. my vlc plays video but no audio, apple music has no audio, no start up audio when i power on. i can however still play audio with an external speaker my ios, vlc are all up to date. have tried restarting, yet still no audio from build in speakers any help pls

Sound not working My MacBook Air sound isn't working. The volume doesn't go up like the buttons don't show... and it says it doesn't have speakers or microphone hooked up?????/

Check the Audio Midi Setup utility to determine where the output is.

Check that you don't have a headphone jack or USB audio device connected.

Check that Airplay is not on. You can do that by temporarily disabling both bluetooth and Airport in system preferences.
