When I am in iMessages if I go to the search bar to find a client they don’t show up. Even if I have people in my contacts don't show up. I have to go to contacts look them up to send a text. Even if I have recently texted them.

The Search Bar at the top of the Message app can only find contacts if you already have one or more messages from the contact in the Message Overview. Otherwise, it searches for words in your conversations.
To start a new Message, tap the icon at the top right of the Message Overview. In the "To:" field, you can search for contacts, you can also tap on the "+" sign to see an overview of all your contacts.
