MacOS not opening photos “because it is from an unidentified developer”?

When set photo to be opened with Pixelmator Pro, then click open, I now often get photo “cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware”?

But, if instead I open the same photo directly in Pixelmator Pro, it opens w/o problem. Also opens w/o problem in Preview.

The refusal to open are only when select in Finder that photo is to be opened in Pixelmator Pro instead of Preview.

But, should I decide w/n to open after a warning? No way to override MacOS?

I am sometimes also getting the popup warning that the photo “is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash. Pixelmator Pro created this file on [date].

In each case, photo opened OK in Preview and opened w/o problem or damage in Pixelmator Pro. Again only happens after select in Finder that photo is to be opened in Pixelmator Pro instead of Preview.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Old Toad, Thanks, but didn't change it. I got the first option, clicked open, but not the scene saying that app was downloaded from internet and asking if still wanted to open. instead just opened PixelmatorPro. ???
did i do something wrong?

What Old Toad showed is something that should occur only once - the very first time you open an application in your mac. Besides, Pixelmator Pro is an app available from the App Store, so I am not even sure this should appear.

It seems that you control-clicked, chose Open With->Pixelmator Pro and it opened, right? That is how it's supposed to happen. Now does the same problem continue to occur if you set the file to open with Pixelmator Pro?

What version is it? Is it up to date?

Thanks, Luis,

You're right, that's what happened. Pixelmator pro just opened.

Opening the app isn't my problem. It's opening individual photos by clicking on them after I use Get Info and changed app used to open photo from Preview to Pixelmator Pro. I did that will all .jpgs. Now when click directly on photo and click, sometimes I get warning that "cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", sometime it's warning that photo damage and move to trash, and sometimes opens in Pixelmator without problem.

However, if instead I open Pixelmator, find and click on photo file, it will open w/o any problem or warning. Maybe I just have to always use that way to open a photo.
