Can only certain SD cards be password protected

Can only certain SD cards be password protected? I tried using Disk Utility but do not see any ability to password protect it. I'm trying it on a 1 TB San Disk card.

It must be in a GUID partition map. In disk utility, you must show all devices from the view pop up menu. Select the device and erase it setting GUID partition map. You may have to erase it first and then go back and encrypt it, but you may be able to encrypt once you set the partition map to GUID.

You’ll only be able to use that device on a Mac running high sierra or later because it will be formatted APFS
