Best practice for multiple profiles

Hello - I have a Mac mini that I was primarily used for audio recording. I am now having to use it for work as well. I am looking for some input on the best way to have 2 profiles (users?). The main thing is that each user would have different apps loaded on startup as well as different notifications settings (all off in the recording mode).

Is the best way to do this just to create a second user (with the same Apple ID)?
