Apple Macbook Air going off but the caps lock light is on. Basically wont say it

Why does my MacBook Air go off all of a sudden, I won’t say it’s going off because the caps lock light is on But the screen is off. Then later the Caps lock goes off, then if I tap any key the system comes up again, this happens when I am not connected to the power source. But if I am connected to the power source it doesn’t go off. Please I need Assitance on what to do

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.2

Hi DavidHDEF,

welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.

Re: Why does my MacBook Air go off all of a sudden

Seems your Mac is just "sleeping" to save power. When you are not doing anything on your Mac that registers as activity ... after awhile it is seen as "idle" so saves power by darkening the screen, and going to sleep.

(After sleeping awhile, if you don't tap a key to wake it, you may need to enter a password or fingerprint to re-access the Mac.)

Re: Please I need Assistance on what to do

The control is in your hands:

All depends on the settings in use, so you can change those if you want.

You can check /change how long Mac is set to be inactive (or "idle"), before it darkens the screen:

Change Lock Screen settings on Mac – Apple Support

NB: If the time for the screen-saver to begin is longer (eg:15 mins) than the time for "sleep" when inactive (eg: 10mins), you will not see the screen-saver appear at all, as seems to be in effect.

The screen saver starts after a warning symbol.

The symbol will alert you that Mac is inactive, and you can tap a key, if you want.

You may want to check (or change) Battery settings that control your Mac’s battery and energy use:

Apologies if your Mac experience was underestimated in the initial reply, as we have no way of gauging that.

Seems we need to find the root cause of the issue, which could be any one of multiple reasons.

Eg: Third-party (non-Apple) apps like unnecessary virus-checkers, ad-blockers, cleaners and the like, often cause issues ... even VPN, or out-dated apps etc. that have become incompatible can interfere. Turning them off, or using the uninstallers available from their developers can sometimes restore normality.

In some cases, a thorough check of the system reveals offending apps / files.

If this could be an issue, let us know. There is a recommended app that can help.

Thank you for your reply, and the update on the persisting issue.

Good to know you have ruled out a few of the possible causes.

Your safe mode experience suggests that software which loads as your Mac starts up could be causing problems.

Apple support have an article that may help determine if log-in items are at fault.

"Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac"

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/remove-login-items-resolve-startup-problems-mh21210/mac

If no start-up items are found to be the cause, from above process:

Temporarily prevent other items from opening automatically when you log in,

and check if Mac then performs ok.

Article below explains.

thank you so much Brbo, But this problem occurs while I am working on the system. This days it has gotten worse, If it finishes the booting process it just goes to sleep all by itself, but initially while I am working on the system it just goes to sleep. I hope I can get a solution to this, I have changed the battery thinking it was the issue but it is not.
