lock screen timout

I am trying to change the lock screen timeout. Previous answers to this question have not been helpful. On the general settings tab on the iphone app there are no options for ‘wrist detection’ or ‘wake screen’, contrary to what others have claimed. Unless I’m missing something…

Unless I am misunderstanding you are wanting to change the time the how long the wake screen stays on? If so, you can go to your iPhone > Watch > Displays & Brightness > Wake Duration.

Here you can change the time between 15 and 70 seconds on tap.

For wrist detection, on your iPhone tap:

Watch > My Watch > Passcode

and Enable Wrist Detection.

For wake screen, on your iPhone tap:

Watch > My Watch > General > Wake Screen

and set as desired.

If you still have problems, your best option may be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar in an Apple Store near you and let them look at it. If that is not possible use the online Apple Support option. They have diagnostics that should be able to determine if it is a hardware or software problem. Either way:
