Can't save duplex print default anymore

The last few weeks, my print dialogs don’t default to the duplex dialog the way it used to. I have to set it each time.

I have a M1 iMac with Ventura 13.2.1 and a Cannon G6020 printer.

System Settings/Printers & Scanners shows two printers:

  1. Cannon G6000 series
  2. Cannon G6000 simplex.

I used to switch between the two, but right now I don’t see that either have the duplex setting.

I started to print something, got the print dialog and switched “Double-sided” to on, then went to “Presets” and created a “Last Used Settings 1” with this setting (“Last Used Settings” already existed).

I started a print dialog, selected “Last Used Settings 1”, and duplex was off.

So I Googled and found https://www.howtogeek.com/309677/how-to-stop-two-side-printing-from-being-the-default-in-macos/

I followed that procedure and saw that my settings *were* duplex.  I couldn’t do it in Chrome or Opera but Brave let me proceed after warning.

It showed that I was doing 2-sided printing, but I set it anyway.  I set the simplex printer to simplex, saved it, then looked. It was 2-sided. Nothing was changed.

... I almost always use duplex printing on an hp LaserJet Enterprise printer, but occasionally I need to print on forms, and they are one-sided. But setting "Two-sided printing" to off stopped working with Ventura - no matter whether it was set on or off, I always got duplex printing.

If this is your issue, here's how I "fixed" it. Sorry it's a bit technical... and I don't have an M1/2 Mac to test against, so it might be different from Intel.

First, macOS uses an open source printing system called CUPS. For those of us in Linux land, it's a bit weird to configure, and I'm sure if you haven't seen something like this before it's very strange. You start out by enabling the CUPS manager to change the printer configuration itself.

You'll need to get to the macOS "shell" to enter a command. Open Terminal.app which is in the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder. In the window you see, enter this command:

cupsctl WebInterface=yes

and hit return. That's all you need to do there; you can close that window.

Now, open Safari or whatever browser you use and go to the URL http://localhost:631 . That will connect you to the CUPS management interface ("port 631"), which runs in a small webserver on your Mac ("localhost"). Go to the Printers "tab" (top-most menu on the page) and select your printer. Next to the "Maintenance" popup menu on that page, there is an "Administration" popup, which you change to "Set Default Options" and the page will then change to show you the "General" options for the printer. For me, the "Two-Sided" option was not off, but you want to set it to Off.

Once you do this, save the options with the "Set Default Options" button. The browser will prompt you for your macOS login name and that password (normally, you'd never enter this on any web page, but this isn't leaving your computer - it's only being sent to the CUPS service).

Once I'd set this option to "Off" the selections I made on the Print dialog worked correctly - Two-sided printing caused duplex to work when it was set on, and when it was set off I got single-sided pages.

P. S. I was just about to post a question about this problem here - I spent a couple of hours trying everything I could think of, and I was at the end of my rope, when I remembered that one last thing - the CUPS management pages - to try. Glad I could post a (possible) answer instead of a question! Hope this helps you or anyone else having this issue.
