undo remove disk on time machine

my imac is running on macOS Monterey.

time machine stopped recognizing my external backup disk connected via USB.

i had setup the external disk to do automatic time machine backups, encrypted.

i've already done a few backups on the disk.

the external disk is encrypted.

unplugging the external disk did not help.

by mistake i clicked on the "remove disk" option in time machine.

is there a way to undo the "remove disk" in time machine and get time machine to recognize the external disk ?

the external disk shows up when i click on "About this Mac" and go to the "report".

IMO, Apple should improve the "Time Machine" backup and allow users to recognize a disk previously forgotten.

is there a way to "mount" the external disk again ?

thanks in advance.

There is, just add it back. It will recognize the previous backups.

Not if it is damaged or otherwise corrupt. Being removed from Time Machine does not prevent it from being mounted.

Does it show up in Go > Computer (cmd-shift-c) in Finder?

Still not showing the HD.

I will try to get in touch with apple.
Tks!

Reformat the HDD using Disk Utility.

There are HDD diagnostic tools. DriveDx was my go-to here, but that seems unavailable. (Some alternatives.)

Even new HDDs can fail, and older HDDs are increasingly prone to failure as they age.
