Cannot unmount a time machine external disk using Disk Utility?

I cannot believe all of the ridiculous answers to this, even by Apple experts. The external disk must remain in communication with Time Machine in order to automatically backup...obviously. THAT is the mysterious hidden program that is interfering with the abillity to unmount the disc using Disk Utility. The solution is to merely go to Time Machine Preferences. On the left side of that, there is a check box to "back up automatically." SIMPLY UNCHECK THAT BOX. Thats it! If you wan't to back up automatically, that external disk must remain mounted. To unmount the disk, simply uncheck that automatic backup option. Personally, I would rather just do backups manually at the intervals I choose myself, anyway. Force ejecting the disk will merely introduce errors eventually. The repair disc function doesn't work for time machine discs because of the way multiple snapshots work. Merely ignore that. The backups will be fine.

I think you didn't quite get what I wrote. In Disk Utility, when you try to unmount the Time Machine disk, it will not allow you to and a dialogue pops up that says, "unable to unmount disk. Another program is using it." That is the problem I was posting a solution to. The "another program" that is using the disk is a subprogram that is always running that triggers the next backup an hour later. That is why the disk must remain mounted. The only way to turn off that program and to be able unmount the disk with Disk Utility is to go into Time Machine preferences and uncheck the box that says "automatic backups." Why Apple did not write a better pop up that identifies the problem is beyond me. It wouldn't have taken much work for them to do that. You get the same dialogue if you just try to eject the disc. It won't allow it. The disc will just reappear on the desktop several seconds later.
