counting amount of cells with a specific content

Hi!

Is there a way to search the sheet (or a specified range) for cells with a specific value or text and have numbers count the amount of cells?

Use case: I would like to put in the abbreviation of an employee on every day he is assigned on a job and have numbers count the amount of work days.
