Excel and Word slow to launch

Hi, trying to figure out why Excel and Word are slow to launch.

I have two identical iMacs (late 2015, with 1TB hybrid drives). One of them takes a long time to launch Microsoft Excel after login: clocked at 125 seconds which is intolerable. If I close Excel and then launch it again, it launches much faster, about 10 seconds, which is tolerable. Similar issue with Word (clocked at 65 seconds to launch after login, then 5 seconds if I relaunch it), but not for other non-Microsoft apps. My other iMac does not have this issue and launches Excel or Word in less than 10 seconds after login and if I launch it a second time.

I have the latest MacOS that my iMacs support (Monterrey 12.6.3) and the latest Excel (16.69) on both machines. Disk First Aid found no issues with the hard drive/SSD. CleanMyMac found no malware. Both machines have a few hundred GBs of available disk space. Both have 8GB RAM. Not sure what else to check.

I'm stumped. Any ideas on the cause/solution of the slow launch on one of these machines?

Thanks.

Hi there!

CleanMyMac found no malware.

Mac computers do not need any sort of antivirus or cleaning software. Anti-virus and similar types of software can cause performance issues, security issues, and make macOS appear buggy. Your Mac is worse with these types of Apps installed.

In addition, Mac computers cannot get any traditional "viruses". The only area of concern is some malware, mostly adware, and it's easily avoidable. Do not install apps from unknown sources, and you'll be safe!

Here are some links that describe Apple's built-in malware protection, which are far superior:

It’s OK to not run EtreCheck.

Please upload a screenshot of your Mac’s storage information. In the Finder, choose Go > Utilities, then double-click the Disk Utility icon. (Disk Utility is located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.) Alternatively, click Launchpad in the Dock, type Disk Utility in the search field, then click the Disk Utility icon. Once Disk Utility is open, take a screenshot of the information it automatically opens to, which will be your startup disk. Next, select View Show All Devices in Disk Utility and select the top-level, non-indented, disk entry. In most cases, this name will be one of the following:

  • APPLE HDD…
  • APPLE SSD…
  • Fusion Drive

Then, take a screenshot of the newly selected entry. Upload all screenshots here.

Next, it is recommended you Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac in order to identify any potential issues. Let us know the results of this test.

I have seen many Etrecheck reports where the presence of CleanMyMac or other so-called "cleaning' apps have significantly slowed drive/SSD performance. The macOS, cat-like, cleans itself and has for over 20 years. You paid Apple to build in elegant, automated self-maintenance routines that run in the wee hours of the morning without any help from you or MacPaw. They take care of all the housecleaning chores, including defragging if needed. Those other apps get in the way of this sophistication.

I'm not comfortable using EtreCheck, sorry.

Without the most value tool in existence for getting accurate diagnostics in a forum setting where we can neither see nor touch your computer, you can try a very low-tech quiz that asks three questions:

  • Is the computer slow to boot?
  • Are big apps slow to launch? (we know that is a yes)
  • Once launched, do those apps run at acceptable speed?

Three "yes" answers point to an under-spec drive or, in Fusion hybrid drives, a failing drive component. The launch times you report suggest something is failing, but that is a guess based on history instead of hard data we lack.

You can try other drive performance tools for reporting write and reads speed that we need to see to effectively figure what is up. At this point we are shackled to quoting generalities when we don't have data.

I suspect you're low on Free Disk Space, but...

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Thanks both.

Here are the Disk Utility screenshots:

The G-Drive is used only for a Time Machine backup.

I ran Apple Diagnostics and it came back with "No issues found," Reference Code: ADP000.

BTW after the diagnostics I shut down and clocked the startup at 4 minutes 28 seconds. That seems slow, but is not my main concern since we rarely shut it down and restart. I then launched Excel and clocked it at 40 seconds, faster than the 125 seconds it took when I last clocked it but still seems slow. The primary user of the problematic iMac reports that Excel is often very slow to launch, with the 125 seconds typical, but sometimes faster.

Please advise if anything seems amiss or any further suggestions.

Thanks both. I checked for Free Disk Space three ways: Disk Utility says 283 GB free; Finder finds 314 GB Available (32 GB purgeable); About This Mac/Storage says 316 GB available. So they are in general agreement and found plenty of Free Disk Space.

I'm not comfortable using EtreCheck, sorry.

I only downloaded and used CleanMyMac as part of this investigation, never intending to keep it. It was not there when the problem began so is not the cause. It wasn't helpful, and I've cancelled the subscription and deleted the app and its files.

Open to other suggestions.

Thanks again all. I'm convinced that the drives are not the issue, since Disk Utility and Apple Diagnostics found no issues with them, and my disk speed app (Aja System Test Lite, free from the Mac App Store and recommended by MacWorld) clocked write speed at 263+ Mb/sec and read at 267+ which is comparable to my other iMac's results. I've looked hard enough for a fix and will stop researching at this point and just live with it for the short term. The 2015 iMac is near end of life (no longer eligible for the latest MacOS) so I'm just gonna replace it soon anyway. If the drive does fail, I've got Time Machine backups so won't lose data.

Thanks again.
