web platforms and browsers can't play iphone's new mp4 format

I am getting MP4 videos from colleagues who recorded them on newer iPhones for posting on various web platforms, but most of them are unable to interpret the codec used. Even on platforms that attempt to play them, the browser often plays only the sound. How do you deal with this?
