Is there ANY password authenticator that works in the Ios 12 range?

I have an older ipad with Ios 12.5.7. We use LastPass as a PW manager. I downloaded it, but it requires use of an authenticator in addition to a master PW. I have been unable to install LastPass authenicator because it requires Ios 15 or more, MS authenticor Ios 14 or more, and even Google autheticator requires at least Ios 13. Is there ANY authenticator that works in the Ios 12 range??

iPad mini, 12

Had to check with someone at work. I recall one of out users had to find an authenticator that would run on an old iPhone as we require 2fa for access to our MS 365 tenant.

There is a free app in the App Store simply called Authenticator by Matt Rubin.

I believe that's what she had to use on her old phone. Claims compatibility with iOS 9 or later.

The iPad mini 2/3 cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 or later due to your internal hardware being too old to support it.

Many app developers have dropped support for iOS 12.x in its apps, often because the APIs in its apps have updated to the most recent version, making this iOS version not compatible.

However, there is an authenticator app called Battle.net Authenticator that works with any iPhone/iPad models running iOS 9 or later, so you can run it on your iPad.

The first generation iPad Air, iPad mini2 and mini3 can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7. With this version of iOS installed, you will have one of these three models. As such, you may have difficulties finding Apps that remain compatible with your iPad.

Apple ended major update support for these three models of iPad in September 2019 - although they continue to receive occasional “point” security updates, the most recent being released January 2023. These devices cannot be updated to iPadOS 13 (or any later major versions of iPadOS) as the internal hardware does not meet the minimum technical requirements (CPU capabilities and available RAM) for newer versions of iOS/iPadOS.

Some App developers have dropped support for iOS versions preceding iOS 13.x for technical reasons (often because APIs or software libraries upon which they rely have been updated in the new version of iPadOS, making their App incompatible with earlier versions).

Whilst many App titles remain compatible with your iPad, if you want or need to access to Apps requiring the most recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of your iPad with a newer or current model that supports iPadOS16. Of current models, even the entry-level iPad9 has specifications and capabilities that will massively outperform you current iPad - and is compatible with the vast majority of current Apps. Other models are more powerful still.

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

For information, here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.7.3

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 16.3.1

  • iPad Pro (all models)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (5th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)

I have LastPass. It has worked well for me, but their latest significant hack is an issue. I'm getting my ducks in a now to go to Dashlane or the like. 'Had hoped I could find a PW manager and authenticator that would work on myiPad as well as my other devices, but based your and the other responses, I cannot. I will have to take it offline for use with games and the like.

Thank everyone who responded to my inquiry.
