Dictionary.app opens but without selected word in a browser

Hello:

I am now using a MacOS Monterey V12.6.3.

Years ago, I set the keyboard shortcut Control-Command-Z to open the Dictionary.app with a selected word in a browser, and it had work for many years. It stopped working, however, recently, maybe since I upgraded my machine to MacOS Monterey V12.6.3 in late January.

Now when I select a word in Firefox, say "anodyne", and press Control-Command-Z, the Dictionary.app opens, but the selected word is not there. And I have to manually type the word in the search window to get it.

Could anyone tell how this problem can be fixed?

(I know the default Control-Command-D and it works, but this is not what I am looking for.)

Thank you,

Roland

In Firefox 111.0.1 or Safari 16.3:

dict://anodyne

Opens the dictionary app with the definition of anodyne displayed.

I recommend that since this is an older Automator service that you open it from your ~/Library/Services folder in Automator, review that content, and then resave it as a new Automator Quick Action under a different name. Then, if the shortcut that you used is not in use by something else now, assign it to the new Quick Action and try it again.

You may need to select the word in the browser and use its Services menu once before the short cut begins to work afterward.

If your service opens the dictionary app on the selected word in the browser, and does not work in Firefox, then under the Firefox Applications menu > Services menu, choose your service there. If it still does not work, then I recommend, as I did before, opening your Service in Automator, reviewing what data type is selected to open in what application, and then resave the service. I don't see a keyboard shortcut conflict with Firefox 111.0.1.

When you save an Automator workflow as a Service (now named Quick Action) it will be in your local Library's Service folder. If you gave it the unusual name of Automator-Firefox.app.workflow, you don't go exploring inside that bundle, you tell Automator to open it. You should be able to right-click on that Service name and choose Automator from the Open With sub-menu. In the future, save Quick Actions without the .app in the name.

Take a screen shot of that opened workflow (adjusting action window sizes as necessary to expose their content). Then using the image icon at the bottom of this editor, select that screen shot and post it here.

Thank you for your replies.

In my original post, I said that Control-Command-Z does not open my dictionary.app with the selected word in a browser (Firefox, which is what I use most of the time). Just now, I found that it works with Safari and Google Chrome and a few other applications, but just does not work with Firefox. So the problem is in Firefox.

What can I possibly do to make it work with Firefox?

Thank you very much for the answer!

However, I don't know how to follow your suggestions exactly.

Under ~/Library/Services, I don't have an "Automator" file/directory, instead I have an "Automator-Firefox.app.workflow/" directory, and under which there is "Contents/", under which there are "Info.plist" "QuickLook/" and "document.wflow"; and under "QuickLook/", there is a file named "Preview.png".

Now, could you please be more specific about what I should do exactly?

Thank you,

Roland
