Voice message to non IPhones

Why can I receive voice messages in text conversations from friends who don’t have an iPhone, but I can’t send my own to them in the same chat? Why would I have to download a separate app, it seems insane to me.

Im not confused how to send them either, I do that all the time when the other person also has an IPhone.

iPhone 5c, iOS 9

Hello AnAgroPotato,

When you're trying to send a voice message, make sure you are using the Voice Memos app. If not, try that method to see if this helps in sending messages to others from the Messages app. Learn more here: Share a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone - Apple Support. This page provides steps for sharing one, or multiple recordings.

Share a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone
In the Voice Memos app , you can share one or more recordings with others (or send it to your Mac or another device) using AirDrop, Mail, Messages, and more.
Share a recording
1. In your Voice Memos list, tap a saved recording, then tap the More Actions button.
2. Tap Share, choose a sharing option, select or enter a recipient, then tap Done or the Send button.

Share more than one recording
1. Tap Edit above the list of recordings, then select the recordings you want to share.
2. Tap the Share button, choose a sharing option, select or enter a recipient, then tap Done or the Send button.

We hope this information helps you out.

Cheers!
