I see folks with this problem on their iPhones, but I'm having this on my MacBook Air (M1, 2020), although the photos are being taken with my iPhone 13 mini. If I take any photo and edit it by either cropping or clicking the Auto Enhance icon, when I click Done, I immediately get the small cloud with an exclamation point icon in the bottom right of the photo. Clicking on the icon produces the error in the headline. Once this happens, I can't do much with the photo, except view it.

  • If I try to "Duplicate", I get the error "Failed to download assets for duplication"
  • If I try to share the photo via Messages, nothing happens
  • If I try to drag/drop the photo to my desktop, I get the error screen (attached), and on that error screen, if I click Reveal in Finder, nothing happens.

If I "Revert to Original", the icon goes away and all is fine. I usually apply some edit to all my photos but I just noticed this in the last couple of weeks. I have iCloud sync turned on, which has been on for years. But I do notice that I don't have this problem with editing and sharing a Photo on my iPhone. Also, a photo on my Mac with the error icon doesn't appear on the same photo on my iPhone. If I had to guess, this appears to be a problem with the background syncing process.

So I think I solved this. In System Settings > Apple ID > iCloud, I turned off Photos. When it asked me if I wanted to save a copy on my Mac, I said No. Then I turned the same setting back on. Now I can edit my photos without getting the cloud error icon.

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities JupiterOne,

Try the following:

After making changes to a photo, sign into the iCloud website and view your photo library there to see if your edits have already synced.

View your photos and videos

1. In Photos on iCloud.com, do one of the following:

* Click Library in the sidebar to see thumbnails of all your photos and videos.

* If you don’t see the sidebar, click the Open Sidebar button.

* Click an album or folder in the sidebar to view its contents.

5. To change the size of the thumbnails, use the slider in the Photos toolbar.

6. To view a photo or video full screen, double-click a thumbnail.

7. While viewing a photo full screen, you can click the thumbnails at the bottom of the window to see other photos. You can also press the arrow keys to move
to other photos.

View your photos and videos on iCloud.com

If you see the original, try waiting to take additional actions with the photo, until you see the edited photo in your library on the website.

Cheers!
